Why Marcus Campione Runs for the Parks

Our runners make it happen! Meet Team ChiParks in our ongoing ‘Why I Run for the Parks’ blog series highlighting members of our 2023 charity team.

The Chicago Parks Foundation has been a proud Bank of America Chicago Marathon charity partner since 2013, as well as the Shamrock Shuffle and the new Chicago 13.1.

These dedicated runners choose to make their miles extra meaningful by running on behalf of a charity. Since our start, Team ChiParks and their supporters have raised nearly $1.5 million for the parks - vital park projects, community and teen programming, our citywide volunteer efforts, and more. This is the Chicago Parks Foundation’s biggest fundraiser!

Meet Marcus Campione, a local sports chiropractor and long time runner! Marcus has previously completed the St. Louis Half Marathon twice and will be running his first ever full marathon with Team ChiParks!

WHAT DOES RUNNING THE 2023 BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON MEAN TO YOU?

Running this marathon, to me, would mean that I have overcome years of difficulty related to past injuries.

I fell in love with distance running after multiple knee surgeries in high school. Overcoming these challenges inspired me to become a sports chiropractor so I can help others live an active lifestyle without pain.

I love the parks in Chicago and want to help keep them clean and taken care of. My associate, Dr. George Nicolopoulos, at Spine & Sports Center of Chicago has previously worked with Chicago Parks Foundation on a 5-part series about safe running during the winter.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT CHICAGO PARKS?

I love that there are so many parks in Chicago, all with their own diverse environments and histories. When I first moved to Chicago I would ride my bike around the city, the 606 trail, and Lakefront trail to explore Chicago. I have also attended November Project workouts in the parks.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT TRAINING FOR THE CHICAGO MARATHON?

My favorite thing about training for the Chicago Marathon is being able to explore the city while I run. I love that I can work on my physical health while also experiencing the city in different ways.

You can keep up with my running journey through my Instagram @marcuscampionedc and @sscofchicago.

Thanks for choosing the parks, Marcus!
